Blogging, gender and narcissism (oh, and Studentjournalist is 53% female)

2008 December 1

Following my escapades on Wordle, I am on the look-out for any funky blog tools out there (as well as any distraction from my mounting student journalism work load).

One discovery is the dubiously ingenious GenderAnalyzer.com which “uses Artificial Intelligence to determine if a homepage is written by a man or woman.”

And my blog is… drum-roll, please…

.. written by a woman (53%), however it’s quite gender neutral.”

A vote on the site itself for users to say whether GenderAnalayzer provided the correct result, came up with the startlingly conclusive conclusion that only 54% of bloggers were correctly identified (I’m not sure if it picks up sarcasm). Oh well, it worked in the distraction stakes.

Another uselessly distracting site for my fellow overworked and underpaid student journalists is Photofunia.

This one fulfils two purposes. It is utterly distracting. And it is also completely narcissistic, which in my view, complements the act of blogging perfectly. “Oh no, it doesn’t” I hear you cry. Well the number of students I have seen in computer rooms obsessively monitoring their blog stats, says otherwise – you know who you are! So in that narcissistic blogging vein, and to confirm that I am not indeed a woman, these are the fruits of my photofunia time-wasting (neat, hey?)

“We guess http://www.alisonbattisby.wordpress.com is written by a man (55%), however it’s quite gender neutral.”

They don’t seem to be that accurate at all!

While shonaghosh is 65% lady. I’m pleased, but that kind of surprises me given that I talk about computers an awful lot. If only the City blog was public, the results could be interesting…
